The story of Noah & Finn
So here goes: Went for what was supposed to be one of my last gynae appointments at 35 weeks and turned out I was dilating already. My dear gynae had planned a weekend away so she pretty much said – go home – meet me in 6 hours and stop eating! Well at that moment I remember thinking to myself that it was either panic and don’t stop panicking or calm the hell down and do things slowly and methodically! (Turned out my sweet husband -Baden- did the panicking for me) Somehow we managed to get ourselves home and start packing the bag. After cleaning the house for granny and grandpa, phoning and sms’ing our entire address book and rushing from one baby shop to another - to find breast feeding bra’s - we got ourselves off to Somerset by 4.
The indescribable excitement I felt is hard to relay. After arriving at Somerset the nurses prepped me – located the heartbeats and pretty much put the catheter in. The insertion of the catheter was probably the most painful experience of the entire operation. I was then wheeled into theater (with Baden snapping away) and was met by the most wonderful anesthetist – (borrowed from Groote Schuur for the day) who literally held my hand and explained every last step – from the spinal block to the pulling and pushing I was about to feel. To be honest I’m not sure I felt anything much after the tiny prick of the spinal block.
Delivering the babies took what felt like about 10 minutes (although from the name tags the babies were wearing I can see they were delivered half an hour apart.) Noah came out first with a full head of dark hair @ 2.1 kilo’s – and Finn came out squashed and bald at 2.3kgs. Baden grabbed them and they were gone. I remember lying there drugged up on what felt like a truck load of morphine listening to the gynae’s chatting and wondering where on earth my babies were. Both were then put in an incubator and as it turned out Noah’s lungs were not properly developed he had to be rushed into ICU.
After that it was off to the recovery room where I ended up trying to talk to my mom and vomiting out half the morphine. After that it was up to the ward where Finn was put in his little cot and left to sleep next to me. In the end Noah was allowed home after two days – so after Baden and I did the endless paperwork to release the 3 of us – it was home time! 8 July 09 - truly the best day of my life.
