The Birth of Wihan Coetsee
Here goes...
I saw my gynea for the last time on Monday, 19 July. I was given a steroid shot to fully mature his lungs & was told to be at the labour ward the next morning at 05:00.
Tuesday 20 July 2010: I got up at 04:00 & got myself ready, checked that I had everything, DH & I left for the hospital at 04:55, my mom stayed with D. I went up to the labour ward, while the hooked me up to that machine thing that measures contractions, DH went down to reception to open my file. I was hooked to the machine for a good 20 - 30 min, the sister said that Wihan has not even begun to move into the birth canal..
a about 05:30 the sister came in inserted the drip, she did a lousy job & there was blood everywhere! my hand is still blue (8days later) anyways about half & hour later they came and inserted the catheter - not painful at all, uncomfortable & slightly
& then the waiting started...
at about 07:20 My gynea came by & said that he will see me in theater in a little bit, the anesthetist arrived & did all the necessary pre op checks & at 07:50 I was wheeled off to theater! I was cool & calm & when they pushed my bed in to the operating room Wihan gave 2 last kicks as if to say - see you soon mommy! I was moved for the bed to the operating table & the anesthetist cleaned my back & gave local anesthetic shot where he was going to do the spinal. I was at that moment so scared that I would be able to feel pain during the op that my BP shot up to 240/120... He did the spinal, got it right first time & within seconds my feet got all warm & tingly & the warm sensation moved up my legs. They cleaned my belly & what a odd feeling! feels like when the dentist numbed your mouth.. your skin feels so funny, almost 'dumb' lol..
My gynea started cutting & I felt lots of pressure during the op, but no pain! the anesthetist was amazing - talked me through the whole process! they had to remove some 'vergroeings' from the previous c-section scar & the Dr that assisted had to push really hard on my stomach to get Wihan out - so that left some bruising & my ribs were a fragile!
Wihan entered this world at 08:23am crying, I started crying! its truly the most beautiful sound - hearing your child cry for the first time! they held him close by so I could have a look & he looked so tiny & fragile, but so beautiful! they cleaned him a bit & wrapped him a towel & the sister took some pics of us. DH left with Wihan while I was cleaned & stitched up. I was in recovery for about 15min because of my BP but by 09:15 I was back in my room.
Wihan got 9/10 for his first apgar & 10/10 5min later, he weighed in at a healthy 3.49kg & 50cm long. It was love at first sight! Thank God my son entered this world safely!

xx
