Portion sizes

Post by Gabby on Thu 14 Oct 2010 - 10:37

well when I am on "diet" I generally stick to "separate foods" rather than curries and stews etc ie. I make a protein, starch and veg so that I can manage my portions ie. a chicken breast, one small potato (you get the idea).

But the weather is so crap today that I thought a lamb curry would be in order.

So it's all in the slow cooker.

Now how much would be a normal (diet appropriate) portion? I know half a cup of rice is the measure but how much of the curry would be ok? (I could eat ten bowls of curry I might add)

As long as the curry doesnt completely cover the bed of rice i would say thats an appropriate portion (you should still be able to see the rice). last night i had Spaghetti Bolonaise and put about half a cup of the pasta on my plate and a dollop of the meat sauce - could still clearly see alot of my pasta. I was down 300g this morning on the scale so i recon the portion size was adequate.

Also my other moto is dont eat till you feel full as if u do u have then over eaten...so eat and once you are done and dont have that full feeling wait 20 min and u will feel fuller. Thats what I do and it helps. Obviously also no snacks after dinner..my downfall sometimes..

They say portion size is the size of your palm

Have a look at this, saw the advertisement in a magazine the other day

Hey

Just typed you a whole answer and the power went off. Lost it all GRRRRRRRRRRR

As I was saying. My dietician encourages mixed meals like that. She say if you always eat a piece of protein, veg and carb you mentally start to feel like you are on a boring diet and then get more hungry etc. Says it is all in your mind but half of eating succesfully is tricking your brain.

So pastas, stews etc are allowed. Even her diet lasagne is AWESOME.

I can send you some recipes if you want.

The portion size we follow is a fist/cup size. One cup meat/sauce, one cup carb, two cups veg. Dark veg better ie carrots, brocolli, spinach, beetroot. Higher in beta carotine which has something to do with stimulating weight loss.

The only thing you are going to hate me for but just for your interest is that lamb is a huge NO NO. Apparantly is something like 80% fattier within the meat so even if you cut all excess fat off you still have loads of fat.

I asked my dietician if I am allowed lamb and she said only on your birthday or wedding. LOL

I suppose once in a while is okay but if you can, try stay away from lamb.

Also the veg you cook in your stew does not count for veg. I mean it does but you still should have more on the side.

Hope that helps from my side.

Sheena please send me that lasagne recipie. I've been dying for laagne just haven't had the time to make it but a diet one would be much better than a normal one. Just got to find the time then.

Thanks.
