Talking
At what age did your twins start saying words? My boys are now just over a year and they only really say "Mama" and sometimes "bye". My paed said that its not unusual that they are not saying much more as twins form their own language with each other, so they stick with that for longer. DO you think there is any truth in that?

Re: Talking
Eve, Sajjaad does not say many words either. he also says Mama and sometimes there and that, but that is about it. He is 14 months already. He understands many things though.

Re: Talking
Cameron hardly spoke until he was like 20 months or so but then he started saying three or four word sentences right off the bat. He has an excellent vocab and speaks so clearly compared to other kids I know.
Nicholas has been jabbering for ages though. He says quite a few words strings two together already like hello daddy, or what's that, or where's it, or there tis etc etc
But they are all so different. Just comparing my two I see huge differences.
One of my friend's little girls only started talking when she was three but boy she spoke full sentences and clearly just all of a sudden and she never shuts up now...

Re: Talking
My twins are 26 months and only now starting to say words. I do think they are definitely a bit delayed in their speech. My son understands everything I say but I think is very lazy and when he wants something he points at it and goes Uh Uh!!!

Re: Talking
They definitely have their own language and communicate with each other all the time!! I never even thought twice about it until he mentioned it yesterday!

Re: Talking
They do communicate in their own lang and mine have full on conversations with each other this way. I would say from about 18 months they vocab starting to really grow. Mine say lots of words and come home each day with a new word. They are putting words together nicely.
Eve, for eg. Wade did not call Erin anything for ages where as she has been calling him Didi for ages. Now for the last two months he calls her Lolo (excuse the spelling) as I call her Lollie. She has stated calling him Wade as well but wont say her own name. I was Mama for ages and npw Erin has also started calling me Mommy. Last week they started with "Lekka juice". When they start they just take off. With twins one is always more dominant (with mine it is) and they are defintely slower. Mine only started walking at 16 months.

Re: Talking
D was able to say 10 words by the age of 12months, but that was it at about 20months he started talking, forming sentences etc. Now at the age of 3 and 1/2 he has an excellent vocab, speaking in full sentences, last night he put 2 6 word sentences together, so I wont worry to much about it. My sisters son was exactly the same.

Re: Talking
Jason & Grant only really started saying words before they turned two or even a little after... they will take longer Eve, as long as they understand that is what is important.

Re: Talking
I read an article in the living and loving about a year ago and it said that even if your child doesn't speak by 24 months its not a problem as long as they can still understand basic instructions!
They're still very small - and if they are communicating with eachother - I dont' think that there is much to worry about

Re: Talking
By age 2 O was talking nicely but R lagged behind, only saying single words. So I had her evaluated by a speech therapist and we are having weekly sessions which has helped her a lot, she is now where her sister is. I wouldn't worry at all till they are 2, but twins do have a higher risk for delays and early intervention is the best.

Re: Talking
My boys started quite early and by 2 yrs they were saying full sentences. It is jus so cute and they are now 30 months and you can actually have a whole converstion with them. They knew words like xylophone and quite a few difficult words by the time the were two. I was really proud. The other night i wanted the remote and spelled it out for my dh to pass it to me. J started fussing and when i asked him what the matter was, he said that daddy must not give me the remote. I was quite shocked as to imagine how he knew i had spelled remote.

Re: Talking
The girls started saying words which you could "recognise " as proper words around 18 months, and around 22 months they started talking by putting 2 words together like
"Sissie kom"
"Mamma sit"
Kossies eet
Sokkies aan
Now at 23 months do they start putting more words together 3 to 4 word sentences.
So your boys are perfectly fine Eve - and i know you talk to them alot so they are building that vocabulary daily. So just wait until Sept/Oct this year and you will be so surprised at what they start saying!
