I don't think you are supposed to give it to them before 4 months but from what some of my friends tell me usually around 6 months.

Hi Tanja
Every baby is different - we checked with the nurse at the baby clinic where my LB was born and started him on solids at 3 months and 2.5 weeks.
There's certain milestones that you need to look out for :
- they no longer have the thrust reflex (where they push their tounges against their inside bottom lip) this means that they have not developed the correct muscle co ordination to swallow solids yet
- they've doubled their birth weight reaching 6 - 7 kg's, babies can only have 1 l of formula a day or it makes their stomachs bleed - it's worked out that your baby needs 150 ml's of formula per kg of body weight a day so when they get to 6.6 kg's the formula is not enough to sustain optimal growth.
- They can hold their heads steady while sitting supported
- They are able to lie on their tummies and lift there heads for a period of time
- they are rolling over.
Everyone has different opinions regarding when to start solids, I know some people are against it until 6 months, if you're baby has reached some of the milestones, just check with your dr or nurse.
Most babies start from 3.5 - 6 months on solids
When you do get solids make sure that the rice cereal is wheat and dairy free.... We started our little one on a teaspoon of cerelac once a day in the morning and then increased it to a teaspoon a week after a month we moved onto purity - the orange veggies - and tried each one for about 3 days to make sure that he wasn't allergic to them and he now is on 2nd foods and eats two jars of purity a day. He doesn't like the cereal at all so we give him a fruit purity in the morning and a veg one in the afternoon. You can give them both but a VERY little in the beginning
Hope that helps
