I'm having soooo much trouble getting Zander into a routine!!! It's like he jut refuse to fall into one so I stopped trying. Also I'm worried if he leep all day, he wn't be tired by night? Is this possible? Is there anyway I can get him to change his three hour feeds to four hours as I am so worried that the formula will make him fat............

How much does a newborn baby sleep?
Newborn babies may sleep as much as twenty hours a day. You may be thinking that if your baby is going to sleep that much, you won't be sleep-deprived at all! The problem, however, is that newborn babies sleep in spurts. Your infant may sleep an hour or two, then wake up to eat for twenty minutes, then sleep another hour, then wake up to be changed, then sleep for thirty minutes...You get the picture! You will need to try and rest when baby sleeps, if at all possible.
Encouraging Newborn Baby Sleep Habits
Although you really can't expect your newborn baby to follow a set schedule, you can gently condition him to become a better sleeper at night. If he seems to sleep better in the day than at night, you will need to create an environment that is not as conducive to sleep during the daylight hours. You can do this by keeping baby in a well-lit room around other people. Interact with your newborn anytime he is awake. Talk to him, and play with him.
As the day turns into night, begin creating a bedtime ritual. You might want to give him a bath, change him into a gown, and feed him while sitting in a darkened room. Many babies sleep better if there is some type of background noise or white noise, such as a fan. You can turn this on only at night. If you continue to follow this ritual, eventually, your baby will associate this with bedtime, and you should notice him sleeping for longer periods at night.

Hi Honey
Have you read Baby Sense? It is a really great book, available from book stores and ToysR Us. It helped me a lot with the first one, and now I am using it again.

Re: Questions on feeding and sleeping
Hi Honey. I also TRIED to get Damion into a routine and it stressed me sooo much that we were both so miserable! I just now feed him when he's hungry and let him sleep when he wants, i've learnt to tell when he's tired and then rock him til he's sleep and then put him down, I did this right from the beginning and now he puts himself to sleep. The only thing I was strict one was that he has a bedtime and I stick to it. Also I had a bit of a "rough routine" as long as it was ... play, eat and sleep ... I didn't care about how long each time took but I made sure he had a sleep after he ate.
Also in the first 6 weeks they dont' know the difference between night and day so during the day make a noise while he's sleeping so he learns to sleep thru noise and at night time, make it dark and quite that way he learns night and day.
As for the formula making him fat, it probably won't happen just take him for his weigh ins (I went once a week which also helped with Cabin Fever) and just ask the nurse if everything is ok...
