Our rollercoaster ride!!
Well, this might be quite a long post!!
DH and I have been together for just over 4 years. We were both previously married, I have an eleven year old son and he has a 21year old daughter and 23 year old son. He had a vasectomy 8 years ago before we met. We decided about 2 years ago that we wanted to try and have our own LO.
Because he had had the vasectomy, he had to undergo testes biopsies each time we did IVF/ICSI. The first attempt, got 11 eggs, we used frozen sperm from the biopsy done the previous month and NONE of the eggs fertilised!
2nd IVF/ICSI attempt, decided to try use fresh sperm so did the biopsy on the same day as my egg retrieval. Got 8 eggs, 5 fertilised, transferred 2 Grade 1 eggs on Day 3 (the other three did not make it to day 5 to freeze). Disappointment again - BFN.
Then decided to try use donor sperm and we did two DIUI cycles - both BFN.
Our last ditch attempt was another IVF/ICSI in October last year. Again, got 8 eggs, transferred 3 really good embabies, but, NO LUCK!!
After a few weeks of deep introspection, we discussed the option of doing a vasectomy reversal. Our FS was not 100% keen at first, but I insisted that it was our last real option! So, December last year, DH agreed and had the reversal. Poor man - 5 ops in total down there!!!
6 weeks after the op, he had his first SA. Not good, but at least there were sperm. Count = 11mil but zero motility!!! Did another SA in March, count up to 49Mil but motility and morphology REALLY bad!
Our FS and the embryologist said that there was NO way that we would manage to fall pregnant naturally, and that IUI was not even an option. His stats were too bad!! Our only option was to go back to IVF/ICSI.
I was really devastated! I had a long chat with the FS and told him that we had decided to wait another 3 months and do another SA to see if there is any improvement. He said to me in no uncertain terms, that the possibility of any improvement was virtually nil! I said that's fine, I am going to wait!!!
AND TWO MONTHS LATER WE ARE PREGNANT - ALL NATURAL!!!
We really do have a miracle baby!!! I have told DH that it would be interesting for him to do another SA just so that we can see what the results are, because I had him on a mixture of Vit C, Zinc and Folic Acid in very high doses and I am 100% sure that this concoction of extra vitamins is what helped him recover after the reversal!!
So, you can understand my surprise and shock when I saw those two lines on the HPT this week!!!

Wow, that's amazing. Do you mind me asking what percentage of sperm was viable?

Re: Our rollercoaster ride!!
Hi Nix,
We were never told a % in terms of viable sperm, only the stats I listed above - sorry! The % for the motility was 1% and the morphology was 3%.
