Twinnies arriving early!

Post by Guest on Wed Jun 03, 2009 12:40 pm

my babies were due 23 Feb 2009, and my c/section was booked for 12 Feb. My babies weren't however going to be told when they can come! On 13 Jan (Tuesday) hubby and I decided to go out for supper. He had been in theatre the whole day and hadn't eaten at all, so we went of to the Capetown Fish Market in Lonehill, Joburg. I had been feeling fine. NO cramps, No pain, NOTHING. We arrived, and I got out of the car. I felt a light contraction, gurgle-gurgle and my water broke (7:30 pm)! I was 34 weeks, 2 days pregnant. After asking if I was sure (duh!) hubby called our wonderful gynae, and he told us to meet him at the hospital. We had to retrace our steps home, to get my bags, and have our maid sleep in the house with miss D, then off we went. When we got to the hospital, the sisters were expecting me, and I was prepped for emergency c/section - with one previous c/section, prem babies, and one of them breash, natural was not an option. My gynae arrived and did an internal - I was already dilating! I was taken through to theatre immediately, the aneasthetist and peadiatrician appearing from nowhere. I was given the spinal, and the next thing I knew, Rachel was out, announcing her arrival in no uncertain terms (22h39)! Then it was Olivia's turn. She was bigger, and breach so the gynae struggled to get her out, then she was out, gurgled a bit, then a cry too (22h41)! Rachel was 1.85kgs, Olivia 2.2. Sue to the fact that Olivia aspirated fluid during her difficult birth they rushed her straight to the NICU, but I got to meet my little Rachel in theatre. Afterwards, I was tekan back to the ward, the sisters cleaned me up and then took me to see my babies in the NICU - it was very diificult to see my babies on their open incubators full of monitors and drips, and Olivia with a breathing mask on, but they were perfect, so beautiful. They had to stay in the NICU for 3 weeks, and the day I was discharged and had to leave them behind was just awful. Eventually though, I got to take them home, and today they are beautiful 6kg babies, the light of our lives (with their sister of course!)

wow Paulae. thanks for sharing. i can relate to the part where your waters broke earlier, and all of a sudden - the same happened to me, scary feeling isn't it. those 3 weeks must have been really tough - waiting for them to come home. but i'm glad all is ok now and that they're healthy! xxx
