My Birth Story
On the 28th of February 2007, I got my BFP’s two pink lines x 2! Confirmed by a blood test, I was 5 weeks pregnant! After the Miscarriage, we decided to keep the pregnancy a secret (until the 12 week mark), meaning I had to cope with the underlining fear of another miscarriage & my hypertension on my own! The 12-week mark came, no problems, halfway and still no problems, blood pressure is still under control.
28 weeks: we went camping (in chalets) with friends on a nearby guest farm, app 25 min drive from town. We arrived late the Friday afternoon, and the men started the fire, we had a lovely evening, chatting until past 22:30, when I decided to go take a bath. I was lying in the bath, and suddenly it felt like the bathroom are getting smaller and my head getting bigger. I got out, felt so nauseas & dizzy, got dressed and stumbled outside(like a very drunk person), telling DH something is very wrong, we rushed back to town, at the Dr’s office, he confirmed that my blood pressure had gone through the roof (200/110), gave me some injections & I was sent home. My blood pressure stabilised.
30 weeks: Blood pressure went up again, and I had a very bad bladder infection, so I was on bed rest for a week. I remember the Dr. saying that problems with blood pressure usually starts at 30 weeks and if they could get me past 33 weeks…two weeks later I was back for my check up & my blood pressure was still out of control, my blood pressure medication doses got increased to the maximum. I was officially on bed rest for the rest of my pregnancy. My blood pressure was still out of control & I was referred to a heart specialist.
35 weeks: I was in a lot of pain & my blood pressure was too high for my liking. My GP told me that I should come back the next week… (During pregnancy I would see my GP every second week & Gynae every six weeks) I phoned my Gynae, who told me to come in bring my bags, got there and my BP stabilised, I was admitted to hospital for observation over night, got discharged the next morning(Saturday). He wanted to see me again on Tuesday, so we stay in Bloem for the weekend. Tuesday morning my blood pressure spiked again, and I was re-admitted for the remainder of my pregnancy! I stayed two weeks in hospital, never in my life have I cried so much, DH had to go home & only came to visit over the weekends. In the meantime, I received medication to relax me, to control my blood pressure, steroids to mature Dewald’s lungs. On the morning of the 17th October 2007, I had an amnio, to check if his lungs were ready, they were!!! I was booked for a c-sec the following day.
18 October 2007: 05:30 I got up, had a long shower, blow-dried my hair & put some make up on. DH arrived 06:30, we chatted a bit, and then he went and got dressed in scrubs, while the sister inserted the catheter and the IV. 07:50 I was wheeled to theatre, briefly greeting my mom & dad. 08:00 I was given the spinal and 08:26 the most beautiful moment – my beautiful baby boy came into this world – screaming! DH cut the cord & posed for some pics with his new baby boy! Weighing 3.5kg & 53 cm with a 9/10 apgar. Back in my room I got to hold him for the first time, I fell in love!! A little replica of his daddy. The next morning they removed the drain & catheter, I got up & showered, walked around (that was also the last time I had any pain medication). We got discharged the Sunday, and all the hardships of my pregnancy were long forgotten. I don’t regret having a c-section for one moment!
