Jaco's birth story (very long & detailed WITH PIC)
I got my 2 lines on Christmas day 2007. I couldn’t believe it, so I bought another one. Again 2 lines!! We could only see the doctor in a few days so the next day I bought 2 more tests…. I know I know! lol
When I was about 28 weeks pregnant, I decided that I wanted a c-section. From there on my mind was set on it and I didn't care what anyone thought or said! I got a few comments, remarks, etc from alot of people. But in the end, it's my body, it's my baby, it's my decision!
I was scared to death, scared for the spinal, scared for the c-section cut, scared for the recovery time. I was just scared of everything!
My c-section was scheduled for monday, 18th of August 2008. The sunday before I was a nervous wreck! Was I going to be a good enough mommy? Have I packed enough things for the hospital? Have I bought enough things the baby would need? The questions just went on and on and on!! Hubby, on the other side, was as calm as can be. He was just excited about being a daddy! He already planned the things he and his boy would do and couldn't wait!
Finally, the big day arrived! I got up. I ate a big breakfast - by orders of my gynae, he told me to eat a big breakfast before nine as it was going to be a long day and a long time before I could eat again. After eating my breakfast (couldn't even finish it - everything made me naar - must have been nerves), I took a long shower, shaved everything that needed to be shaved and washed my hair. Then I got dressed, did my hair. It was 10:30.
11:00 we drove to the hospital, it was 5 minutes away from us. We sat in a qeue waiting to be booked in along with a few other pregnant ladies. Finally it was our turn, we booked in and they showed us to our room. My roomie was already in her hospital gown, in her bed and very very nervous. Hubby went to fetch all of our bags. The nurse gave me a hospital gown to put on and showed us where everything is and so on. Then she brought a file with lots of papers and asked us some questions. I got my tags, hubby had to write the same numbers and our surname on Jaco’s tags. The nurse put a sticker or something on my back where the spinal was going to be to numb the area.
I got into the hospital bed and the nurse put a monitor on my very big tummy. Jaco’s heartbeat was monitored for about half an hour.
They took the monitor off and then the waiting began. The gynae said the c-section will be done at 14:00 that day, but then we heard he was running late. Eventually at 14:30 my roomie was wheeled away. I was so scared, I was next!! At about 14:50 the nurse came to get us. They gave hubby his hospital gear to wear and off we went to the theater. I had a huge wee and the nurses didn’t want me to go to the loo. We had to wait outside the theatre as they were still busy with my roomie. THAT was nervewrecking! Eventually the paediatrician came out with a very very tiny baby and a very excited daddy with a camera behind him. Then I just couldn’t wait anymore. The baby was soooo small (3.0 kg baby). Then out came my roomie and they wheeled us in. The gynae greeted us and introduced us to everyone. Hubby looked like he was going to pass out, he was so pale! They helped me out of bed and I had to sit on the operating table. Hubby gave the camera to the anesthesiologist because he was too nervous and was shaking so much! lol The doctor gave me a pillow to hold and I had to lean forward. Hubby stood in front of me and squeezed my hands very tight (he was more nervous than I was). They inserted the spinal, I just felt a little pinch – not sore at all! Keep in mind that all this time I still had this huge wee! I was so scared of peeing all over the place when they did the spinal! They quickly let me lie down on the operating table and then my bumb, legs, feet and toes started to feel very warm and tingly. Then it went away. They put in the catheter (I was so glad it was afterwards) and a blood pressure monitor and we were ready to begin!! I felt a lot of tugging and pulling and the doctor asked if we are ready. We just said ofcourse! The next moment he said to get the camera ready because Jaco is almost here. This is a moment I will never ever forget. The gynae showed him to us and he was the most beautiful thing I have ever seen. He was crying and I remember thinking that he is soooo small! I started crying and praying and just saying thank you Jesus!! The paed cleaned him and then they brought him to me to hold. Then hubby and the paediatrician went off to go do the tests. Jaco was born 15:20, weighed 2.975 and 47 cm long. He scored 9/10 on his apgar tests. That was the longest wait of my life!! I joked and told the gynae to hurry up I want to see my baby!! The anesthesiologist told me they have to sew back together 9 layers!!!
Anyway, finally they were done. I was wheeled to recovery so they could monitor my blood pressure. All was good so I went to our room. I had spinal shock from the anesthetics and was shaking so much I couldn’t talk. Luckily that didn’t last too long and after about 2 – 3 hours I could start wiggling my toes.
