Damion's protest against being pulled from his jacuzzi
Our LB’s entrance into the world was almost as unexpected as the two lines I got on the HPT test- 36 weeks earlier!
Damion was due on 15th October 2009, I had planned on taking maternity leave from two weeks before he was due.
My gynae is a brilliant “little old man” who is totally thorough at EVERY appointment he does scans, measurements etc and when I went for my 36 week check up he asked if I was on maternity leave yet and I said no – to which he replied I better go on leave cos baby was gonna be coming this week – I had already lost my mucus plug – this was Tuesday… He then booked me off for the week and told me I dare not go back to work (an angry little greek man can be scary!). His only concern was that Damion had not engaged at all – so he did a few scans and I had CPD, basically it means that there was no way babies head was gonna move past my hips, he then did some lung function test and said that Damion’s lungs were ready and if I wanted we could do a c section (which he refers to as a complication) on Friday! EEEKKK … Being horribly uncomfy because I had a baby sitting on my lungs I agreed…
So Tuesday I went back to work, did my handover and got home at 8pm… Wednesday morning bright and early at3 am when I went for my routine wee, suddenly I was convinced everything in the house was infested with germs so I waddled my big preggy bum to the kitchen grabbed rubber gloves a toothbrush and a big bottle of domestos and started scrubbing EVERYTHING… DH wok eup with me scrubbing the soles of his shoes – I kid you not!
My friend came over a little later and I was convinced that I had a runny tummy (TMI sorry) from the germs in the house, she calmly told me that no it was cos I was probably in labour… how on earth could I be in labour when I was only having Braxton Hix , which were perfectly timed!
Wednesday night we decided to go for our last dinner as nonparents to our favourite little Chinese restaurant on the way there I told DH that our LB must be really exicted cos he was jumping around and stretching – DH decided to time them, they were 10 minutes apart – he decide that we should go to the hospital but I convinced him it was not contractions after all on tv – contractions are painful and woman scream…
On Thursday my friend from CPT flew up as a surprise visit to come and see me, and we spent the day relaxing and chatting, and she helped me pack my bags…
Friday morning we got up – got ready and went to the hospital by now my LB was “stretching” every 2 minutes… I was booked to go in at about 11 but we all had to arrive at the hospital by 6 to be hooked up to machines, have drips put in etc… I was watching the machine and every minute the numbers would go up to 100… 120… 130 – DH went outside to have a smoke at about 7 while the nurse came into do my drip – she took the prinout from the machine, rushed out and called the Matron, the next thing I knew DH was being dragged back inside, told to put on the theatre outfit and I was being wheeled to delivery – appratnely I was in labour ! And of course DH had to tell me that he was right ALL along!
While I was waiting for the aneathetist to arrive, I joked with DH that we could still make a run for it…
The policy at the hospital was that DH couldn’t come into theatre while I was having the spinal done, which took 6 tries, but I thin I was so excited about having our baby that I didn’t even feel all of them…
My gynae walked in at 8.15 and started chatting to me and told the theatre nurse to call DH and then the most amazing feeling I’ve ever felt washed over me, my water broke – I have never felt such a relief in my life! The DR told me it was my water breaking – I then asked him when he was going to start cutting and was chatting to DH when I suddenly felt really sick, the aneathitist popped something into the drip and before I could even complain that I wasn’t working and that they mustnt’ start cutting until I felt better - at 8.17 I heard the most amazing sound in the world, I big healthy “how dare you pull me out of my warm jacuzzi” cry! … It was the most surreal, amazing feeling in the world, I looked up at DH and we both were crying so much… The pead came in and DH went to watch him while the aneathetist wipped the tears away from my eyes soI could see my gorgous little man…. The stitching up felt like it took FOREVER… I was back in my room by 8.45 and all I wanted was to see my baby! We had still not decided on a name…. I kept sending DH to the nursery to take pictures so I could see what my boy looked like… At 13.30 they brought a gorgous clean, fat (3.575 kg) baby boy to me… And the tears started again – we both took one look at him and decided he looked like a Damion! He immediately latched onto my boobs and started eating and til today he hasn’t stopped!
Even though the whole pregancy was unplanned, the second I held Damion all doubt washed away and he showed me exactly how to be his mom!
