We're all home

Post by ELAINE on Wed 2 Sep 2009 - 10:49

Hi there everybody,
We are finally all home.Carmen was discharged last Sunday when she weighed 1.9kg. I must say things have been going a bit
hectic ever since. Feels like I'm awake all night giving bottles and burping them. But its getting better now, hubby also at least
help in the evenings. When do they start sleeping longer than 3 hours before they want milk. Carmen seems to want to sleep longer, but if
Bjorn wakes up for his feed, I wake her up too. Should I leave her to sleep. Sorry for all the questions Smiley

Congrats on having all your babies home. Now it does get hectic. It is up to you if you want to feed them separately but be warned then you really will be feeding all night. you can try to stretch then by waiting 10min more each feed each day and after a few days they will be feeding 4 hourly. Also get a night nurse for the odd night of rest it really helps.

Hi Elaine,

Congrats on having them both home. If I was you I'd keep them on the same feeding schedules for now, otherwise you really will have absolutely no time to yourself. With Carmen still being so tiny you need to also make sure she gets her correct daily intake of milk, by stretching to 4 hourly feeds she would end up missing out, and her tummy probably can't hold that much milk at a stretch. Even now at 5 months Grace does not take much more than 100ml at a time.

With my two - when they reached about 3kg I stopped waking them at night and after putting them down at about 9pm for last feed would let them wake up naturally. They would normally sleep until about 2am (if only one woke up I would wake up the other as well), and I would feed them then an again at about 6am. So really only 1 feed at night. There was a point when I was feeding Michael every 4 hrs during the day and Grace every 3 hrs but it was really disruptive. When Grace reached 4kg I started feeding every 4 hrs during the day. She is a baby who is not overly keen on her food anyway and would probably happily go 6 hrs between feeds - but because she is so small (at 5 months she weighs 5kg!) I force her to eat on schedule!

I know it is completely exhausting now but you will find your routine and what works for you. I used to make my DH do the 6am feed before he left for work so that I could sleep in!

Congrats on having the little one home too! I also woke them both up at night till they were around 4 months old, then I stopped. Although this meant getting up twice, I am convinced it helped a lot to get them to sleep through. Of course only when they are big enough... mine started sleeping through (and I mean 6pm to 6 am without so much as a peep) by 6 months. They are now 7 months and although it is still hectic feeding them now full solids + milk it is MUCH easier then when they were really tiny. Good luck!

Congrats Hun, this is wonderufl news and I think you feel complete now with both home!!

Elaine my twins were on a 3 hour routine till 4,5 months. I could do everything to stretch it but nothing work. They woke up every 3 hours so I didn't need to wake them. In the beginning they were 30min apart with the feeding - day and night, just to give me time to feed to one and then the other one. From only 3 months they started to strech their feeding so yes I still get up at night about 2 times because I don't wake them up together.

It was very difficult in the beginning but it worked for me. Mine is almost 6 months and still don't sleep through.

Good luck hun and enjou evry minute with them!!

Hi

Even though I can't comment on the feeding and routine since my girls are not born yet, I just want to say how happy I am that both your babies are at home where they belong. Thumbs Up

Only sleeping 2 or 3 hours at a time must be exhausting, I am getting quite scared when I think it will be me in a few weeks time.

:Unsure

Enjoy being a mommy and good luck.

Thanks for all the advice. I must say I am getting used to the little sleep now. My husband seems a bit cranky 3o clock in the mornings, but I don't blame him. He feeds Carmen cause she drins much less and quicker than Bjorn! I will continue to wake them both up until Carmen is a bit bigger. Thanks again
