What are the odds if any

Post by Adele on Thu 3 Sep 2009 - 10:42

I just want to know what the odds will be, if any for us to have twins. My DH's mom had 2 sets of twins - 2 boys and 2 girls (they are 9 children - ha ha). His one twin brother had one sets of twins. Is there a chance of twins or is it only at the women's side (I dont have any twins in our history of family). I won't mind twins, just asking what the odds are...

Thanks ladies

Hi
Identical twins are most likely incidental, not genetic in any way, however with IVF there is an unexplained increase in the incidence of identical twins.
Fraternal twins can be genetically linked to the mom'side, as she would have to produce 2 egg cells to make fraternal twins. So if it is on your husband's side, unless he has some gene on his side leading to identical twins, probably unlikely, in my opinion.

Older women can be prone to produce more htan one egg per cycle, yes Lilly. Mine obviously were from IVF so no family history involved either.

Thanks you girls. I actually found out that if it's not due to IVF then it will only occur if someone on the women's side has or had twins somewhere, but it's got nothing to do with my husband, but only my side.

I have identical twins and my husbands uncles are identical and on my side my mothers cousin have identical twins. They say that is can skip one generation, so it can only be that your children will have twins and not you.

Identical twins is from the mother side becasue the man's sperm "bepaal" the gender and the egg of the woman needs to devide to produce identical twins and also fraternal twins - woman need to produce two eggs so twins is coming for the mother side

My gynae told me that identical twins are a complete stroke of luck, one in 800 natural pregnancies... fraternals are hereditary, I am not sure from which side though

I have read often that older mums have twins as they are reaching the end of their fertility cycles. Apaprently you are either producing no eggs or producing too many! Thats why I always encourage 30 years olds to get going I did find out afterwards however that my grandad had twin brothers - so yip I'm sure that had an effect.
